off some of your newly ingested morsels on the
Riverfront Promendae out front.

Great
Food, Great Value
Union Street
4145 Woodward
Detroit, MI 48201
313-831-3965
www.unionstreetdetroit.com
You'll need a cab ride north out of
downtown to eat at Union Street, which is nestled
along an entertaining block in midtown. Its worth
the ride. There are lots of tasty dishes at Union
Street, including those of both an American and a
more exotic fair. Breakfast at any hour is a
personal favorite.
Small Plates
1521 Broadway
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-963-0497
If you want cool, you want Small
Plates. This cozy restaurant serves up small
dishes in big numbers so you and your party can
try a little of everything - and it won't break
your bank. Many dishes start under $10.
Detroit Beer Co.
1529 Broadway
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-962-1529
Two levels of in-house brews and
excellent food make the Detroit Beer Co. a great
place to catch a game or eat a full course meal.
Especially tastey are the brewer's bread, pizza,
and the reliable cheeseburger.
Cobo Joe's Bar and Grille
422 W. Congress
Detroit, MI 48226
www.cobojoes.com
A Detroit institution within walking
distance of world famous Cobo Hall and Arena and
Joe Louis Arena. If you catch a Wings hockey game
once in your life, this place is a must visit.
Pizza Papalis
719 Griswold Or On Monroe Street In Greektown
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-259-4444
The deep dish pizza and urban
atmosphere at both Pizza Papalis locations are
worth checking out. But, be warned! You'll
probably over eat and need a nap afterwards.
Vicente's
1250 Library Street
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-962-8800
Vicente's is Detroit's first Cuban
restaurant in some time. Work crews spent months
renovating its home on Library Street into a
swanky hotspot complete with neon signage
reminiscent of Miami and a Cuban flag. This is a
personal favorite, for their low prices and
authentic Cuban feel.
Hunter House
Inside the Hilton Garden Inn
1427 Randolph
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-965-0265
After relocating from its home
across from the brand new Hilton Hotel in 2004,
the Hunter House completed a new look with a new
afterhours menu. If you're looking for something
fancy, you'll like the pricier dinner menu.
Still, you best bet is to catch them at lunchtime
and get yourself a few of their famous
hamburgers.
Hard Rock Cafe Detroit
45 Monroe Street
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 964-7625
Though it seems you can find a Hard
Rock Cafe in every city these days, Detroit only
got its version of the American classic a few
years back. So long as you try a desert, request
the YMCA, and check out Eminem's sweat pants
hanging on the wall, you're guranteed a good time
at this old flame.
Johnny Rockets
2239 Woodward Avenue
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-471-3446
First, make sure you have plenty of
time to spare; these are some slow cooking
hamburgers. Then, scarf them down. And p.s., have
a chocolate malt. You may hate yourself in the
morning, but you're going to love it tonight.
Cadieux Cafe
4300 Cadieux
Detroit, MI
Phone: 313-882-8560
The big attraction at this
upper-East Side establishment is not, as their
ads say, the World Famous Mussel Dinners. What
really packs them in is America's ONLY feather
bowling facility. Never played? It's ok. They'll
show you how to have a good time in no time.

Practical
Choices
Lafayette Coney
Island/American Coney Island
Corner of Michigan and Griswald
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone:
313-964-8198
If there is a must visit on your
budget eatery tour, this is eat. These
side-by-side Coney Island restraunts have been
competing for Detroit business and visitor
lunches every day for decades. American is
fancier (though hardly fancy) and was even
spotlighted on the Food Network. However, don't
just pass up Lafayette Coney - their closely
aligned seating and soup-Nazi-esque staff will
have you feeling very Metropolitan in no time.
Jimmy John's Subs
Monroe or Griswald Locations
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-963-9131
If quick and easy is your thing,
Jimmy John's is your sub shop. With two locations
- Monroe is slightly older - and a plethora of
employees to make your sandwhich, you'd better
not stutter when you order or you'll have
something different before you can correct the
error of your ways. Its good, its fast, and its
cheap. What more can you ask for?
What About Bob's?
Griswold
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone:
(313) 967-9001
If you are on vacation and your diet
is out the window, What About Bob's is the place
to eat. Their hamburgers come in three sizes: too
much, way to much, and heart attack; their ribs
come soaked in sauce. One healthy thing about
Bob's is it's quaint atmosphere. The cook is two
feet away from the counter and the counter is two
feet away from dining patrons. In other words,
you can customize your order however you want,
just don't blink while walking by or you might
miss it.
Bellacino's
Inside 1001 Woodward Building
1001 Woodward Avenue
Detroit, MI 48226
Phone: 313-963-3000
Toasted subs and greasy pizza make
bellacino's a great lunch after a night of heavy
drinking at the beer company. Everyone who tries
this place loves the subs and has to come back
for more.
Subway
Several Located Throughout Downtown
65 Cadillac Square
Detroit, MI 48226
Local residents may tell you that
casino's or stadiums or loft dwellers caused the
rebirth of downtown Detroit. But, anyone who's
ever counted the Subway locations knows the real
truth - its all thanks to Subway. You'll find six
or seven of these expansive eateries downtown,
but stop by the Cadillac Tower location for
professional service within a short walk of
Campus Martius Park (yes, there is a location in
Grand Circus Park, but with so many Foxtown
visitors, its lunch line can be VERY long).
McDonald's
Woodward in Midtown or Renaissance Center Food
Court
Detroit, MI
Oddly enough, McDonald's are hard to
come by in downtown Detroit. The two locations
you may want to check out are located in the
Renaissance Center food court and on Woodward in
Midtown. If you have access to a car or feel like
catching a cab, check out the Midtown location
between Mack and Warren Avenues. The neighborhood
is vibrant, but don't try to use their bathroom.
Its under lock and key 24/7.
Burger King
Lafayette West of Sixth Street or Gratiot North
of Russell
Detroit, MI
Why anyone would come to Detroit and choose
to visit a Burger King is a mystery, but if you
must there are two slightly inconvenient
locations to choose from. The restaurant on
Lafayette is several blocks west of downtown, and
the restaurant on Gratiot is several blocks east
of downtown. If you have to pick, catch a taxi to
the Lafayette Burger King and when you're done
eating, walk east to the big blue building that
is John King used books
